  • Is an individualized, long-term process in which an individual, in partnership with a Vocational Counselor, learns to identify his or her strengths, resources, abilities, capabilities, and interests in order to develop employment goals, training and objectives
  • Is not a placement service
  • Is aimed at recovery, rehabilitation, and skills training which emphasize each individual’s strength and ability to become independent and self-sufficient within his/her community.  The level and degree to which reintegration occurs includes consideration of the personal choice and the readiness of each client.
  • Is dedicated to providing real world business practices and teaching normative work skills and psychosocial rehabilitation.

Vocational services are completed in the community or an environment that will prepare the individual for a competitive placement.

  • Work Adjustment Training (WAT) - A type of vocational evaluation combined with vocational training. The evaluator arranges a situation, either volunteer or paid work, and the evaluator focuses on training the individual on appropriate work behaviors and interpersonal skills in the work setting.

  • Job Coaching- “Training services provided by an individual other than the employer (unless under a program of natural supports in a supported employment placement) to an individual with a disability after he or she has been placed in an employment situation.” (DVR, 2000).
  • Vocational Groups/Job Club- These structured group settings are designed to provide assistance and support for job search activities, emphasizing self-directed job search techniques, and may focus on interviewing, resume writing, hygiene, communication skills, stress management, anger management and social skills.
